Organization(s) and Title(s):
Gary Shamshoian, P.E., LEED AP
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Design Engineering
Genentech, Inc.
Professional Engineer, California - Mechanical Engineer License M24566
LEED Accredited Professional for New Construction as of December 2008.
Current Relevant Project(s):
Preparing for a presentation at ASME July 2009 Conference in San Francisco.
I am bringing a patent pending Integrated Lablight fixture to market.
I am working on more building component patents for greatly reduced energy consumption.
Past Relevant Project(s):
Labs21 Planning Committee for the 2008 San Jose conference.
Presenter at Labs21 2008 San Jose conference: Optimizing High Performance Laboratories - An Owner's Perspective.
Teaching high performance building design techniques that cost less to build and less to operate.
Three of California's Energy Star buildings were designed with my oversight and guidance at Genentech. They were completed on time and under original capital budget, and they perform approximately 20% better than industry standards.
I have two magazine articles on improved buidling designs published (Forbes.com and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing).
Short Bio:
I started my career as a designer with an SF consulting firm, then a decade as a Mechanical/Electrical Coordinator and Start Up Engineer with large general contractors (IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose Convention Center, Ritz-Carlton Hotel in SF), then over 17 years managing construction projects for owners. Prior to Genentech, I enjoyed finding design solutions that saved first costs and operating costs, and at Genentech we have been applying these ideas at the whole building level for even further savings in energy, maintenance and operational efficiency improvements.
Education:
Stanford BS ME 1978
University of Colorado, Boulder MS ME 1983
Inspiration(s):
Saving energy in large scale applications - my efforts have saved over 3 megawatts (negawatts) while at Genentech.
Turning frustrations into business opportuinities.
